Mice deficient in IL-10 develop colitis spontaneously over time, unless they are maintained under germ-free conditons. The pathology is similar to that observed in T cell transfer models, with a Th1/Th17-type immune response and epithelial hyperplasia, mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate in the mucosa and submucosa, crypt abscess formation and occasional ulceration; in addition, formation of cryptopatches can be observed.
